The people of the Korean origin in China attempt to preserve their culture by upholding the age-old tradition of celebrating annual rituals of paying respects to the ancestors. In the ritual, certain foods are prepared for the ceremonial table in order to honor the ghosts of the ancestors. One of the preferred food items is octopus, an expensive item in China. The Koreans have found a way of sharing this unaffordable item by handing it around amongst the neighbors for the ceremony. At the end of the day when all the rituals have ended, the octopus which has made its day's round of the Korean households in the neighborhood, is left shriveled up and dried out. Octopus is thus a symbol of the pains of economic hardship that accompanies the lives of ethnic minority and the weaker race.
